1. Irish new home building jumps 35% in surprise second quarter boost (Source: MSN)

The number of new homes built in Ireland increased 35% year-on-year in the second quarter to 9,214, a surprise boost that completed the strongest first half since a 2008 property crash, data showed on Thursday. Ireland has struggled to house a rapidly growing population since the collapse of the construction industry in the wake of the crash, and the number of homes built last year fell 7% to just over 30,000.

2. Limerick City ‘milestone’ as work to begin on Revenue’s new Opera Square building (Source: Irish Examiner)

Work is set to commence on a new 14-storey office building in Limerick, as council members gave the green light to sell lands at the Opera Square site. The decision was made at the latest council meeting, and will see the new building constructed on behalf on the Revenue Commissioners. The Office of Public Works will pay €1.1m for the move and will also cover the development costs incurred so far by the council.

3. Govt announces €112bn investment in infrastructure (Source: RTE News)

The Government has announced the details of a flagship plan to build infrastructure over the next five years which will include an overall investment of €112bn. The revised National Development Plan (NDP) contains funding for housing, energy, water and transport projects from 2026 to 2030.

4. Planning granted to upgrade key cycling and pedestrian route for Passage West (Source: Irish Examiner)

Planning permission has been granted to upgrade a key cycling and pedestrian route for Passage West, which the council has said will improve the health of residents and boost tourism in the area. Cork County Council applied to An Coimisiún Pleanála last November for permission for the 2km of upgrades which it said would boost the usage of the paths starting at the Cork city/county boundary and stretching into Passage West.

5. Construction begins on Dublin’s historic fruit and vegetable marketConstruction begins on Dublin’s historic fruit and vegetable market (Source: Irish Independent)

Construction is now underway on the long-anticipated redevelopment of Dublin’s historic fruit, vegetable and flower market – ten years after planning permission was first granted. The redevelopment project of Mary’s Lane market in Dublin 7 is now underway with the view to add two new buildings to the original site. Dublin City Council agreed to borrow €30 million for the €44 million revamp.
