Green light for 19 new apartments near Kent Station in Cork despite local opposition (Source: Irish Examiner)
 
Planning permission has been granted for two apartment blocks opposite Kent railway station in Cork city, despite opposition from a local residents’ and heritage group. An Coimisiún Pleanála rejected an appeal by Summerhill Residents’ Association & Heritage Preservation Group against a decision of Cork City Council in April 2024 to approve plans for the construction of 19 apartments in two four-storey blocks on a site at Lower Glanmire Road.

Walk around any construction site in Ireland today and you’ll quickly notice the tension that defines the industry. On one side, demand is stronger than ever, from the urgent need for housing and social infrastructure to the rapid expansion of data centres and renewable energy projects. On the other, the sector faces some serious headwinds: a shortage of skilled labour, rising materials costs, tighter regulations, and supply chain disruptions that seem to come out of nowhere.

4. Government spends half a million euro on campaign to attract workers back to Ireland (Source: Breaking News IE)
The government has spent almost €500,000 on a campaign to encourage construction workers who have moved abroad to countries such as Canada and Australia to return. The campaign has used massive billboards with slogans such as “You’ve built Sydney, now come and build back home” to try to recruit some of the 70,000 construction workers needed here by 2030.
