There’s a need for 22,000 extra engineers over the next decade – and ‘Engineers Ireland’ is welcoming the growing interest in honours maths in the Leaving Cert. The number of students taking the paper this year has increased by 3%, the highest number since 2011.

2. Planning submitted in Donegal for construction of new apartments (Source: Independent IE)

The construction of social housing and apartments continues in Buncrana with an application submitted to Donegal County Council on August 5. The application follows other housing projects that have been given the green light for planning this year including an application by Ronald McGrory for the construction of 14 new homes in Buncrana when was approved in March of this year, 11 months after its initial submission

3. Ireland’s County Kildare completes government data center (Source: Data Centre Dynamics)

County Kildare in Ireland has completed the construction of a government data center. As reported by KFM Radio, the data center was completed in July 2025, with construction beginning in 2023. The data center will be for government use, replacing several smaller data centers, and is located at the Backweston Campus in Kildare. It has been designed with sustainability in mind, and waste heat may be used at other buildings on the campus.

4. Cork housing: Plans for 500 Dunkettle homes approved despite local opposition (Source: Irish Examiner)

Plans for a large-scale residential development comprising 550 new homes on the outskirts of Cork City have been approved, subject to revised conditions, by An Coimisiún Pleanála. O’Flynn Group got the green light from the city council in April for the first phase of a major new housing scheme on the site near the Dunkettle Interchange that it has owned since 2003.

2. 17th Annual CECA Dinner and Awards, September 26th, Dublin
