  1. Engineer shortage threatens Ireland’s housing and infrastructure plans, new research shows (Source: Irish Times)

    A shortage of engineers threatens to leave the Republic struggling to build homes and critical infrastructure, new research shows. The State plans to spend about €270 billion building homes, energy, water, transport and other infrastructure over the next decade.

2. House construction activity jumps despite overall decline in sector’s production (Source: Irish Times)

Construction activity related to housing increased sharply in the second quarter of the year, provisional Central Statistics Office (CSO) data has revealed, despite an overall drop in activity levels across the sector compared to last year. The statistics agency’s latest building and construction production index also indicates that non-residential activity declined sharply in the three months to the end of June.

3. Building of over 3,000 homes commenced in July, new figures show (Source: RTE news)

The building of 3,028 new homes was commenced in July – an increase of 169% on the same month last year (1,125) – according to figures to be published later today by the Department of Housing. Of the new commencements last month, over half (1,612) are houses being built as part of multi-unit developments, 1,004 are apartments, with the remaining 412 made up of one-off houses.
