Ireland is facing an alarming shortfall of engineers, it has been claimed, as key national infrastructure projects come on stream over the coming decade. Cork branch of Engineers Ireland chairman Mark Cotter has warned that the country could have a shortage of more than 22,300 engineers in the next 10 years.

2. Construction begins on Glenview Park housing scheme in Sligo (Source: Irish Independent)
Sligo County Council has announced the formal signing of a contract for the construction of three housing units at Glenview Park, Ash Lane, Sligo. The works will be delivered by McCusker Contracts, following their appointment as the successful contractor for the scheme. The development has been designed by the Council’s Housing Capital Section and forms a key part of its ongoing efforts to expand the availability of high-quality housing across County Sligo.

3. Plans lodged for the construction of over 80 new homes in Darndale (Source: Dublin Live)
Dublin City Council has proposed the development of over 80 new homes in Darndale. The council have lodged an application to propose the development of new housing units through the construction of two or three story high complex with one apartment block and three terraced housing blocks.

4. Project worth over EUR 1 billion for Ireland’s busiest railway line (Source: Railway PRO)
Ireland’s busiest railway line is to be expanded from two to four tracks over a 14-kilometre stretch between Dublin Connolly station and Malahide. The FourNorth project is estimated to cost over EUR 1 billion and involves the extensive refurbishment of ten stations. The public rail operator Irish Rail is preparing to increase capacity on the Dublin Connolly–Malahide corridor, one of the most congested sections of the Irish network. The project, known as FourNorth, involves the construction of two additional railway tracks along a 14 km section. The exact configuration will be determined following a public consultation scheduled for later this year.
